A kurta shows everything a bra does wrong. Seam lines print through cotton, a wide back band rides above a deep neckline, and straps wander out from a wide armhole all day. The bra that works under a t-shirt is often the wrong one here.
This is the short version of what to wear under the four kurta shapes most women own.
Short answer
Wear a seamless, moulded, non-padded or lightly padded bra under a kurta. Match your bra to the neckline, not to the outfit's colour: full coverage for a high round neck, a demi or balconette for a V-neck, a tube or multiway bra for a deep back, and a strapless or convertible style under a sleeveless kurta.
Why do bra seams show through a kurta?
Most kurta fabric is thin. Cotton, rayon, muslin and lawn are woven light so they breathe in Indian heat, and light fabric does not hide texture. A seamed cup has a stitched ridge across it; under a fitted kurta that ridge catches the light and reads as a line across the bust.
Seamless and moulded cups are cut and shaped rather than stitched together, so there is no ridge to print through. If your kurta is fitted and light, this single change fixes most of what looks wrong.
Looser cotton kurtas are more forgiving. A seamed bra is fine under a straight-cut or A-line kurta that does not sit against the body.
Which bra suits which kurta neckline?
Neckline decides the bra far more than kurta length or fabric does. This is the pairing that works for most people:
| Kurta neckline | Bra to wear | Why |
|---|---|---|
| High round neck | Full coverage, seamless | Nothing is visible, so choose purely for comfort and a smooth line |
| V-neck or sweetheart | Demi cup or balconette | The cup sits lower than the neckline, so the bra stays hidden |
| Deep back or keyhole back | Tube bra or multiway with a low back strap | A standard band sits higher than the opening and will show |
| Sleeveless or wide armhole | Strapless, or a convertible with racerback | Side wings and straps are visible from the side otherwise |
| Sheer or white kurta | Skin tone, seamless | Skin tone disappears under white; white shows through it |
The white kurta rule surprises people. White fabric over a white bra creates a visible contrast against skin, while a skin-tone bra reads as nothing at all.
What should you wear under a fitted cotton kurta?
A seamless moulded cup, in skin tone or a shade close to it. Fitted cotton is the least forgiving kurta fabric because it sits directly against the bra and moves with you.

A tube bra, or a multiway bra with the straps rearranged. A regular bra band sits roughly at bra-line height across the back; most deep-back kurtas and blouses open lower than that, so the band is simply visible.
Detachable straps are the useful feature here. One bra covers a deep back, a halter neck and a regular kurta if the straps come off and reattach.

Non-padded, non-wired, cotton or cotton-lycra. If a kurta is what you wear to work every day, comfort over eight hours matters more than a perfectly smooth line for one photograph.
Padding adds a layer of foam between you and the fabric, which is warm in summer. Non-padded cotton breathes, and under a looser kurta nothing shows anyway.

- Wrap a soft tape snugly under your bust, level all the way round. That is your band size.
- Measure loosely around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level.
- Subtract the band from the bust measurement. Each inch of difference is roughly one cup size.
How do you stop straps showing at a wide armhole?
Three options, in order of how well they work. Convert the bra to a racerback if it has multiway straps, which pulls both straps inward towards the centre of the back. Wear a strapless bra, which removes the problem entirely but needs a firm band to stay up. Or wear a bra with narrow straps set closer to the neck, which many full-coverage styles already have.
Strap holders sewn into the kurta shoulder are the tailoring answer, and worth asking for when you get a kurta stitched.

Can I wear a padded bra under a cotton kurta?
Yes, and lightly padded moulded cups are one of the smoothest options under thin cotton. The trade-off is heat. In peak summer a non-padded seamless bra is more comfortable for a full day, and under a looser kurta it looks the same.
What colour bra should I wear under a white kurta?
Skin tone, as close to your own as possible. A white bra under a white kurta shows as a lighter block against your skin. Skin tone reads as nothing. This holds for any sheer or pale fabric, not only white.
Is a t-shirt bra the same as a seamless bra?
Not quite. A t-shirt bra has moulded cups designed to look smooth under close-fitting knits, and is usually lightly padded. Seamless refers to the construction — no stitched seams across the cup. Most t-shirt bras are seamless, but a seamless bra is not always padded.
Which bra works under a sleeveless kurta?
A strapless bra, or a multiway bra converted to racerback. Wide armholes expose the side wings and straps of a regular bra when you lift your arms. If you are choosing one bra to cover several kurtas, pick a convertible style with detachable straps.
How do I stop my bra straps slipping under a kurta?
Straps that slip are usually a band problem, not a strap problem. If the band rides up your back, it is too loose and the straps take the weight instead. Try a smaller band with a larger cup before you tighten the straps further.
